DST vs PES vs EXP vs JEF: which embroidery file format do you need?

Embroidery files are not interchangeable. The format has to match what your machine can read. Here is a quick way to choose.

Embroidery digitizing · stitch-ready DST, PES, EXP, JEF

The short answer

Use the format your machine brand reads natively. If you are not sure, check your machine manual or ask the manufacturer, then tell your digitizer.

The four common formats

  • DST is the industry standard for many commercial machines and stores stitch positions, but not thread colors. Color changes appear as stops.
  • PES is used by Brother and Babylock machines and can carry thread color information.
  • EXP is used by Melco machines.
  • JEF is used by Janome machines.

Why you should not just convert files

Converting between formats can lose detail, and resizing a finished embroidery file changes stitch density. For a different size, ask for a new file made for that size.

What to tell your digitizer

Machine brand and model, the formats you need, fabric, final size and thread brand. With that, the file can be set up for your exact job.
